Interested in Reading John Owen?

“The choicest believers, who are assuredly freed from the condemning power of sin, ought yet to make it their business all their days to mortify the indwelling power of sin.”
-John Owen

“Do you mortify; do you make it your daily work; be always at it while you live; cease not a day from this work; be killing sin, or it will be killing you”.
-John Owen

Last night Kevin read from John Owen on the absolute and utter necessity of killing sin.  The quote he used from Owen was “Be killing sin, or it will be killing you”.  John Owen was a theologian who lived from 1612 to 1683 in England.  Although he wrote over 300-years ago, his writing is still absolutely relevant.  People have not changed, nor has God.  We are still utterly wicked, full of sin and self righteousness, and deceived by the sin in our hearts. God is still holy, still calls us to have a righteousness which exceeds that of the scribes and the Pharisees, and to love the Him with all of our heart, soul, mind and strength.  There is nothing new under the sun.

If any of you are interested in reading Owen, I know of one book which comes under the recommendation of John Piper (he wrote the foreword).  It is called Overcoming Sin and Temptation.

It was updated/revised to a more modern form of English in order to be more readable than the 17th century original.  It can be found here (and many other places I’m sure).

This video is an excerpt from John Piper on why believers must memorize scripture.

I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you. –Psalm 119:11 ESV

Let us be a church that practices the discipline of memorizing scripture!  For a really helpful memorization tool, look at this post.
